Re: Merry Christmas to me

On this thread, I broke down and got myself a bushing repair/short shift kit
(thanks Mike of Virtual World Parts). My shiftter just started making this
mildly irritating *click* *click* noise when I moved it from side to side so'z I
figured I'd do the bushing thing and see what this short shift business is
about. If I don't like it, I'll just put my stock shifter back on.

I had a 2.0 bottom end before I left New Mexico, but donated it to a poor sap
who's 16V blew up after driving from Virginia. What the hell, he was the only
other Scirocco 16V owner in town (imagine that in a town of 14,000) and I daresay
I shed a few tears for him when he showed me his toasted engine. I
know...bleeding heart VW enthusiast I am :) Anyway....I obtained another 2.0
16V crankshaft for $75 from Colorado Auto Salvage in Inglewood, CA. Looks good
and I've an appointment at the machine shop up the street next Wednesday to have
it looked at professionally and have the good man explain the lightening of the
contraption to me. Might just as well leave it as it is though.

I've contacted the good gents at JE and asked for a quote on a set of pistons,
and I've budgeted for a Schrick intake cam (would an exhaust cam ruin my
emmissions?) but for now I'm just purchasing parts. I don't think all this stuff
is going on my car until next spring or summer at least. I have to budget for
the head work and the rental car I'll need while my car's down for upgrade.

I've just had my car repainted so she's looking spiffy...and I've also had the
driver's seat re-upholstered and repaired <needed new cables> ($100). On that
note, there's an excellent VW repair shop in Inglewood, CA--German Auto.
Louthar Matthaus (owner) has an entire block for his business. Repair shop,
upholstery shop, and body shop all in one. 670 South La Brea, Inglewood, CA
90301 (310) 671-8823. I dropped my car off to have my shocks installed and he
also did my seats. Total cost (I brought the parts for the shocks), $240. The
seats took all day, so if you plan on going, make sure you have a ride to work or
back home.

A place to AVOID for VW repair is Renner Tuning, also in Inglewood. I called to
make an appointment to have my brakes checked three times and when I finally got
a time, when I arrived, the mechanic wasn't even available. Also, they had a
couple Scirocco 16v's that belonged to the owners and were "awaiting repairs" and
something in the back of my mind told me I didn't want to have to come down to
the shop and blow a fuse if any parts suddenly "disappeared" off my Scirocco.
Understandably, I became frustrated and went to German Auto where I didn't have
an appointment, but my car was seen and repaired the same day. Very clean shop
(I'm a stickler for clean shops), knowledgeable staff, and they even have a bowl
of candy in the waiting area :)

Happy Holidays all!

Steph
