Problem adjust seat back with the "spinner" dial...

<x-charset iso-8859-1>On this '88 Scirocco 16V I just picked up, I can't get the backrest on
either seat to adjust by turning the dial on the inner side of the seat
back.  The dial turns without much resistance and nothing happens.  Is there
an easy way to fix this or am I doing something wrong?  Never had this
problem on any of my other Sciroccos.
