It's commonly referred to as a "belly pan".  Among other notable VW products
that had a belly pan were the Audi V8.  It's interesting to see one for the
Scirocco.  Since the Mk1 and Mk2 have fairly similar underpinnings, I wonder
if it wouldn't fit both cars.
