RE: [Tech] Valve Seal Replacememt ?

SP tools makes a valve spring remover that can be used with the head on
the car. Both TT and Autotech sell most of the tools that SP makes for
VW's. It is around $130 last I checked. You will need to hook up
compressed air like you said. Most auto stores (pep boys, etc) should
sell these as they are pretty common. I forget the maker. You need a
compressor too, of course.

For the procedure, give yourself at least 2 hours (estimate). It is
pretty easy, just go nice and slow so you don't screw anything up.

Did you replace the seals when the engine was rebuilt? During the early
phase of the problem, did you notice if it smoked more when revved after
idle. With the valve seals, if they start to leak, the increased vacuum
at idle tends to suck oil into the intake which the engine then burns.
That's why some old beaters will spew out a puff of smoke as the light
turns green, and then be *relatively* clean after that. That *probably*
would not be happening with bad rings. (But I've never had bad rings, so
what do I know).

Would bad rings show up as low compression?
