The best cheap upgrade I've ever done is gut the cat and take the
muffler off, replace it with a couple of cherry bombs. But I'm
masochistic. It is interesting though that this seems to put one's gas
mileage up by about 4mpg. People tell me that VW's like a little bit of
backpressure - maybe a muffler's better with larger than stock sized
exhaust, but I've had really good experienced with stock size exhaust
and no restriction on the flow whatsoever. Check your local laws before
doing this, and if you have objections to your car being loud, don't do
it either.
    I find that it really makes a huge difference in how the engine
feels - quicker throttle response, more power, especially up high. Just
eager to rev in general.
