Re: [other] why not Quantumize?

(laugh) 150bhp??
Try 250!
An Audi 10v turbo's good for about 250bhp if you do a little wastegate spring
swap and a chip. But... it's not that simple to upgrade a normal Quantum
5-cylinder to that much power. Quantums have CIS-E injection, and for reasons
that I don't quite understand, but I've been assured are important, all turbo
engines are either CIS or CIS-E Motronic. And also for some reason that nobody
has been able to explain to me adequately, it's necessary to swap the whole
turbo engine in, instead of just bolting up the intake and exhaust. It
certainly can be done- everything bolts up- but you have to swap over the whole
ignition system. But WHEW would that be fun! Especially in a Syncro Wagon like
mine : ) I love open diff systems... ever experienced power-on OVERsteer in a
VW? Or a 4-wheel drift on a dirt sweeper... try it sometime, you'll be
addicted!
Right now, I figure I have about 122bhp and 130 ft-lbs of torque out of my
engine, but I'm just guessing. Stock it had 115bhp and 126 ft-lbs of torque.
That's for the QSW. The regular Quantum had 100bhp and 115 ft-lbs of torque.
The difference is in exhaust (much bigger and better on the QSW) and intake
manifold (again, bigger on the QSW). The QSW has exactly the same engine as a
4000Q. But shaving the head, doing a little porting and polishing, a little ram
air, and some really nice exhaust should net you a BUNCH of power from a
5-cylinder. I'm guessing maybe 160bhp? That'd be enough for me, so it's
probably what I'll do... someday. Unless I get really motivated and put a 20v
turbo in there (haha) I would love to have a 300bhp Quantum.
Keep in mind, though, that these cars are HEAVY. Mine weighs about 3000 pounds,
empty, I believe. It is all wheel drive, but that's still one friggin' heavy
mother. With 300bhp to move it, it would still MOVE, though : )
