Re: Swapping Engines...HELP!!!

Hello,
I think you have got your hands full with this one-
not that it is especially hard, but it requires alot of knowledge of how FI systems work
to convert a Carb. car to FI. (and i am sure the list would love to help you out every
step of the way.)
usually, it is best to have a complete donor car. those little bits and pieces add up from
the dealer or junk
yard if you don't.

I would get as much of the wiring harness as you can because you are going to need it.
don't cut ANY wires until you are absolutely sure where they go, and what they do.
you will need to switch coils- (unless the GTi has points-[my old early 83 GTi did!] in
which case you can use the old Bosch blue boy)
you will need wiring diagrams from both cars, and the fuel lines will have to be changed
as well. (carbed cars have a lower pressure rating.) I have used the correct diameter
brake line with good results in the past.
don't forget the relay for the fuel pump, wiring to the fuel pump, and keep those FI line
ends clean! (tape them up when they are sitting!)
the extra line is for the o2 metering, it is not _necessary_ but useful.
the box I think you are referring to is the computer- a necessary evil
(or good, depending on your technological standpoint)

don't get intimidated by all this work. In the end, you will have learned more about your
car, and it will be all that more special to you.

PS- now is the time to clean every bit and piece. those FI lines polish nice with some
fine steel wool,
Just dont allow any to get into the lines!
Black krylon works great for all those brackets etc.
I wish you all the luck, and i f you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Subject: Swapping Engines...HELP!!!

:Well,
:
:I finally dropped the old carbed motor out (by myself may I add - it's
:really not all that difficult) but now I have realized that there a number
:of things which I don't know where to hook up or I don't know what they are
:used for. I'll asked just a few questions for now. BTW, I will be
:attempting a similar swap in the spring with my 81 Scirocco.
:
:1) the car is a 84 Rabbit and the motor is from a 83 Gti. The extra pipe
:which runs along exhaust downpipe. Is it found on the fuel inj cars are
:where does it hook up to.
:
:2) should I change the box under the glovebox and how about the unit on
:the driver's side near the wiper motor (what's that for anyways).
:
:3) do I need to change the coil or is the carb and fuel inj. coils the same.
:
:
:I guess I'll keep it short for now and hopefully I will figure things out.
:I don't want to be without a car for too long. And to those of you who
:attempted engine swaps, I understand what you guys and gals went through.
:Hopefully when I'm done, it'll start.
:
:
:Thanks,
:
:Sal
