new transmission

Pardon the intrusion, my 87 cabriolet needs a new transmission, dealer
quoted me $4200 for a rebuild installed.  This is not something I could do,
but I would like any suggestions form you guys on what I should do? I don't
want to scrap the car, it's my wifes baby. Does an auto tranny for that car
really cost that much?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am really in a bind
