He couldnt have a recurveddist on his 16V unless he has done one of 2
things.
He could be running carbs on his 16V? Then he can use whatever
distributor he wants.

Or, he could have had his ignition box remapped since it is what controls
the ignition timming.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe he advanced the
distributor further than stock. This will give better low end, and if it
pings, then the box will retard the timming until it stops. Other than
that, I have no idea what hes talking about.
