New Fuel Relay but no pump action (The woes continue...)

I was hoping to relate a positive message this evening about the car firing
up and running beautifully. Unfortunately, such is not the case. Rather
the woes continue...........

As a recap, I have gone from a carb setup to the favourable fuel injection
system. The car is a 84 Rabbit with a new 83 GTI motor. I had to wire up
the fuel pump and also purchased a new fuel pump relay. However, when I
turn on the ignition switch, I don't hear the fuel pump running. I
bypassed the switch by hooking up terminals 30 and 15. Progress, the fuel
pump runs. Great I thought. Possibly the new fuel pump relay is
defective. I call up the dealer and he says that the fuel pump is not
defective and goes on by saying that terminal 30 has constant power while
terminal 15 only comes on after the ignition switch is on. He also
mentioned that term. 15 is not a ground wire. I dunno...the Bentley says
other wise. So back to the drawing board I went to re-check my wiring....

It turns out that when the key is turned to the on position, I get powerat
terminals 30, 15 and 1. Out of curiousity, shouldn't there be power at 87.
Terminal 87 runs to the fuel pump and I thought that once the key is
turned, the relay would allow current flow through terminal 87. This is
where the terminals are hooked up to..

30- direct current.....
15- ignition switch
1- red wire connected to a live wire from the seatbelt relay
87- fuel pump and ignition coil

Another thing, i did a test on the ignition coil with the key at the onm
position. At terminal 1 at the coil, I get current...At terminal 15, I
also get current. Is it possible that I have the coil wires mixed up?
There are two wires which come from the fuse box. A red/black wire which
possesses current and a black one which also possesses current. The other
two wires coming from the little box on the driver side near the wiper
assembly (I forgot what it's called) are green and black, green has
current, but the black doesn't. I have the 2 black wires hooked up to
term. 1 and the green and red/black to term. 15. Does this all sound
right? Further testing shows that the red/black wire flows from term. 1 on
the fuel pump relay while the black wire also matches up with term. 15 on
the relay which hooks up to ignition switch. What a nightmare!!!!!!!!!!
I also noticed that on the distributor, there exists a male adaptor which
seems to me that I must connect something to it. I'm not sure if such is
the case. This is such a PITA. I had the motor in two weeks ago and I
still haven't gotten it started..........

Sorry for this post being so long but I need to get some input from
somewhere. I know that if I take it to a mechanic, he'll financially drain
me. Plus, I'd have to tow it to him.
