Wow! sorry man!
There's no good way to avoid this crap unless, i'm sure you all know to
get insurance and/car alarm.   Also, after having dealt with some of
this stuff at work, the theives are generally like you and me.   They
like to sleep at night and _do_ create quite a bit of havoc during the
day, contrary to public opinion.   What really bites is few people want
to stop them.   Car alarms having become so common, no one really pays
much attention anymore and also, if they're fast, once they get inside
your car, they can look like they're supposed to be there.   I guess the
best advice is to keep everything out of sight and keep your (working)
stereo low so it doesn't attract attention.
