FYI, my 88 does have the blacked-out VW emblem, but does NOT have the "16v"
badge. As far as I can tell, it is the original grille. There's no evidence
of any accidents/damage prior to my little bumper-bender a couple of weeks
ago, though it's certainly possible that it's not original...

Yes, they are interchangable.  There are a couple of differences though,
the 16v grille has a blacked out VW emblem, and should be equipped with
a red/black '16v' badge in the lower corner.
