sounds like you have a leak in your exhaust, most likely before your
cat.  you're getting the noxious pre-catalyzed fumes inside your cabin,
VERY BAD!!  this should be fixed as soon as possible.  it could be at
the coupling of the manifold and downpipe, and the exhaust gasses are
rising up and going into the "fresh" air intake under your drip tray...
this may be why you heard a backfire when shutting off your car, maybe
your car always did it, you just never heard it because you didn't have
a hole in your system before.  until you fix this, keep your windows
rolled down, carbon monoxide poisoning is very dangerous.....  you just
fall asleep and sometimes don't wake up....
