Driveshafts

A related question,

	Along with my Scirocco, I have an 85 Golf.  One of the driveshafts
seems to have thrown a counter weight.  I don't drive it everyday, but I
have noticed something different.  It was pointed out to me by the
mechanic last week while it was in for service on a different system. 
My question is what type of damage might this have caused between the
time it fell off and when it was noticed?  Have the bearings taken a
real beating?  The car has some extra vibration, but seems alright
otherwise.
