i must be crazy too.  i do this with all of my lights and driving
lights.  works great because you can see the beam pattern on the road
and you can place the lights exactly where you want them.  then i check
like you do to see if they are too high.  and then i take it to get a
yearly inspection and get it returned with a charge of $40 dollars added
on to re-aim the headlights "properly" so they are pointing 15 feet in
front of my right tire....
