 I usually probe the fusebox with a voltmeter...always works for me,
  besides, it's been the only method I've found to work unless somebody
else knows
otherwise....    I've installed radio's and alarm's in both of my
cars...as well as made other
none factory modifications...
 In your case, I've wired in the Radar Detector directly with the
"ignition on" wire which is
what I believe you are seeking.....

 '82 Scirocco, 5 speed
 '88 Jetta GL, 5 speed
