Its my own personal policy to replace all of the tranny seals anytime I
have it out of the car. 
As far as special tools, you only need the special tool to remove the
axle bolts from the tranny. You might need a dentist tool to remove the
big seal but a small #1 flat tip screwdriver works well too. Stab the
seal, and work it out without damaging the tranny case.
