Will an Auto tranny fit in an 86 8V? Yes.
Will an Auto tranny be better than the manual tranny? Hell no, never.

Your lack of acceleration problem is in the engine and not the tranny. No
factory VW auto tranny ever gave more performance than a manual unit.
