They get old. Replacement is easy, but it involves draining the coolant out.
If collected in a clean container ( about 2 gallons worth ) then it can be
reused. Better to mix in 60% Distilled Water and 40% new Phosphate Free
coolant though.

It is possible that the lower hose is cool because of an air bubble preventing
hot coolant from opening said thermo but, what the hey. Swap the puppy. Don't
forget to drill a small hole in the flat portion of the thermo. prior to
putting it in. This will aid in preventing those pesky air pockets. Also, when
refilling- Pour some of your premixed/ and or reused coolant stuff in the top
rad. hose. This will put coolant up on the top of the engine, this is a good
thing, to avoid 'burbles' in the system. Oh, and open the heater control to
full ON during this whole procedure.

Huh, huh, lemme catch my breath.

What type/weight oil are you using? 1-W-30? Bleah! Try 20W-50 or 15-50 syth.
Oops Forgot it's winter time. Still, maybe it's thinning out. Perhaps your oil
pump is not putting out enough, I wouldn't know how to check this without a
gauge hooked up.

Maybe I'm helping,
