Also, on some cars there is an A/C drain hole that drains off the
condensation from the A/C inside the car. On my MK1s this has been
located on the right side of the center console (under the carpet) . It
drains through a hole in the floor to the bottom of the chassis. This was
clogged on my 1980S when I bought it  (1992), and I believe this
contributed heavily to it's ultimate rusty demise.

yes, this a horrible problem called 
"the infamous leaking heater core".
this is the box that transfers water from the
motor to expel heat into your cabin and cool
the water at the same time.  Occasionally,
these go bad and spring a leak.
Pain in the ass to replace.
