Performance Variance

I own an 87 16v Scirocco, and am having a disturbing problem with it
(only one however). I seem to have quite large performance variances.
For a week after I got my car back from the mechanics for minor exhaust
repair, I noticed that my car seemed to have A LOT more power... i.e. I
tap first and I burn up the road. Then after a while (a week), my power
seemed a little tamer. I am thinking, maybe it is because at it's
current setup, my 250w amp is constantly, though slowly draining the
battery (it was disconnected at the mechanics) or perhaps I had been
with out my car for so long I forgot how it felt to be behind a fast
german car. I can't exactly take it to the mechanic and say "I think
it's less powerfull, find out what it is", as this will make me without
my car for a while, cost me a lot, and they probably won't know what it
is either. Please help.
