Things of Interest from the VW Jamboree in Costa Mesa

Just a few things of interest from the VW Jamboree.
Vorsicht was there with over 30 water cooled cars, as well as a large
group from Vegas, and 3 of the San Diego clubs and a smattering of other
water cooleds. The New Beetle Club (NBC, gee that doesn't sound like any
other company or anything does it) was there with about 10 New Beetles,
most of which seemed to be bone stock. Over all, there were probably
close to 150 watercooled cars at the show. Probably double from anything
I have previosly seen. Didn't see any VW Cola cars though, Guys? Did I
just miss your cars?
From a show persons perspective, pretty disorganized. Usually at
this site they are really organized with classes and parking. Early bugs
here, Busses over here, Ghia's over there etc. This year, most of the
water cooled were up front by the stage and the rest of them were
scattered to the wind. Only reason that there was any grouping was cause
most clubs came with at least 7 or 8 cars and parked together. The
classes were silly too. All Golfs were in the same class. Could have
been a 79 rabbit or a 97 Drivers edition. All Jetta's same class. I
think Corrados and Scirocco's were one class, but out of the only 5
scirocco's there ( we had more at lunch and almost all of those could
have done well at the show), they had 2 different class numbers so I'm
not sure. They need to break them down into at least semi-custom and
custom next year and definitely try to break them down by year. Other
than that it was a very good turnout. Speaking with a couple of people
at the show, apparently VW is emmissions testing some of the Jetta IV's
at their testing facility in Westlake Village. The engine they are
testing, the VR6 of course. So it looks as if the VR6 will be coming at
least in the new Jetta's.

CARS OF INTEREST:

NEUSPEED GOLF IV: Aaron Neumann was there with their A4 GTI. V5 engine,
front and rear recaro's (factory and they will probably never come here
that way) Koni shocks, Neuspeed springs and a chip. 18 inch wheels. He
said it should be on the cover of EC in a month or two. They chose the 4
door V5 with GTI package cause they have already seen the 1.8 T and
wanted something different. Nice looking car, no sunroof (didn't order
one)

NEUSPEED 1.8 PASSAT: Upgraded turbo, exhaust, chip, extrude honed
intake, air filter. Around a $2400 upgrade and is now putting out close
to 230 - 240 hp.

VR6 NEW BEETLE: Some shop named Doctor Boltz from Hermosa Beach has put
a VR6 into a white new beetle. Car was trailered in as well as a yellow
NB with a turbo installed. When looking at the turbo car, noticed some
hose weren't connected and assumed that neither car was finished yet.
Looking at the VR6 later, he said " Watch your hands guys. I'm gonna
start it up." It started and ran. Sounded like a regular VR6. He was
talking to someone about the custom motor mounts he had designed to keep
the engine from ripping apart the NB front end. Apparently he had to cut
the core support to get to the dipstick and the air filter is redirected
from the front left in stock config to the top right, where the Jetta/GTI
radiator overflow bottle is located. No cool air in that location.

AIR BAG JETTA III: There was a pretty plain green with tan interior
Jetta GL with large 17 or 18 inch Niche 5 spoke wheels. The front fender
almost came down onto the upper lip of the rim. He was apperently
running on an airbag suspension like the full size trucks do. His rear
plate frame read" If sparks don't fly, you are too high."

2.1 16v CORRADO: Didn't get a chance to talk to the guy, but there was
a black corrado with a DOHC 16v euro plate on the car. I saw it from a
distance and thought, gee that guy must have taken it off of his GTi.
Got up to it and the guy had swapped in a 2.1 16v into his 90 Corrado.
Not sure why, but it was different.

WIDE BODIED VR6: The silver Oetinger wide bodied GTI that JT had put
together about a year ago was there. It is now sporting an AMS
supercharger system. With the Vorsicht club.

SILVER A2 RACE GTI: Really low silver GTI, with 16v and dual front draft
carbs on it. very clean install.

RED VR6 GTI: Also with Vorsicht. Nice red GTI VR6 with 18 inch ABT
wheels, ABT body kit, race seats with harnesses. very clean and well
done.

WINGS WEST RACE JETTA: Scott from Wings West has been showing this car
for a couple of years now. It has front and rear race seats, Nitrous
system, on board halon system, Baer big brake conversion in the front, 18
inch wheels, Wings west wing and body kit, graphics, now with a nice
stereo system. Oh and by the way, it is a 2.0 automatic.

WINGS WEST RACE JETTA II: Red jetta with the very aggressive looking
Touring car front air dam and large rear wing. Car definitely looks like
it is there for business. also a 2.0.

POWDER BLUE JETTA III: From JT automotive, this car is very clean. DTM
style mirrors, door jambs and trunk painted baby blue as well. He now
has a four round set up for his headlights similar to mine. He used the
stock grill, and took some H4 and H1 lights, made up some brackets for
them and used back straping to mount them in place. Then took a clear
plexiglass shield meant to cover the stock jetta lights and used that for
his headlight lens to fill in the front space in front of the lights and
fill in the rest of the grill. A different look.

WOLFSPORT/DMS CARS: Wolfsport brought out quite a few cars from Nevada
with heavy emphasis on graphics. Best one, (most positive comments I
heard) was a red 4 door with a Hot Wheels logo on the side of the car
that took up most of the rear portion of the car.

Like I said, there were a lot of cars, and I was only there for about
half the day, so there may be more that I missed on certain custom mods,
but that should give you guys a good feel for what was there.
