Greg Schilhab <gschil@orthomed.org>: VIN mystery deepens...

The plate in the window is riveted to the dash. I just replaced my dash
inmy '82 - and now it's displaying a VIN for an '87 16V! (I kept the
orig. plate from the old dash). There are other places on the chassis
that have the VIN (rear trunk).

Thanks Jason, Iain, Mark, John and Brett for the flood of info. Geez,
talk about bumper to bumper 24 hour roadside assistance!

I'm completely stumped now. I just got the records from the 2 previous
owners. All the way back to day one *at the dealership itself* this 16V
car has work orders for 16V parts with WVWCA 0532HK000076 written at the

top. New taillight, new head gasket, brakes-nuthin JH about it. The Glove

door and the back hatch had the badges too. And yes, there was a stock
stress bar. Does anyone have an idea whats going on here? Ten years of VW

service departments writing down the number and nobody clued into this
glaring discrepency!
There cant be any way that *every* part would have been swapped into a 8
valve body. So if the car is right and the Insurance co. is right the
only thing that could be wrong is the plate itself, huh?

Could the factory have screwed it up-the wrong VIN plate attached? Maybe
too much Jagermeister for lunch??

I see the plate peeking out of the dash, but what exactly is it riveted
to? Something other than the body, perhaps something that WAS stupidly
swapped?
I gotta figure it out before my insurer eight valve's my settement.

Theories Wanted. TM

Greg.
