dash woe woe woes

        I am in the process of installing a nice new dash into my 87 16V.
And have got everything back together.  One problem,  I am not very good
with wiring, and could use some advise.  It appears, from what i've been
told, that a ground wire has probably come off.  

Symptoms:
          when i open my door, my trip computer and cig lighter light come
on, but the dome light doesn'.  Also my stereo is getting no power.  The
only thing that might not be connected, is the cig lighter power source.
The power for the light is there, but not for the heating element.  could
this be whats making the current go nutty on me.  Its wreaking havoc on my
alarm too.
