The brake trick should work... was the car in gear?

Another alternative (though never had to do it on VW) is to put a long 
breaker bar on the crank bolt (make sure it's secure!). Rest the handle on 
the floor, or maybe 
let it catch on the a-arm. Then jump in the car, turn the key to bump the 
starter (pull your fuel pump relay and ground your coil wire) for just a 
split second, this should pop that bolt no problem.
