Check to see about spark first.  Dont move the distributor till you do.

if no, pop open the distributor because something isnt right in there.

if yes, check to see if the #1 wire goes to where the rotor points when
the motor is at top dead center, according to the flywheel.  If it doesnt
you probably didnt get the wires on right so redo them and check firing
order.  If it does, you may then have to adjust timing by moving the
distributor.

However with nothing at all, even backfires my guess is you have no
spark.
