The first step would be to indeed, clean the bottom of the engine and
tranny. I cant emphasize how easy it makes finding the source of leaks if
you clean the engine/tranny. Its not just to make the engine bay pretty,
its also for practical diagnosis reasons too!

Its likely to be one of the following seals:
1) Axle drive flange seals

You will see fluid accumulating at the axle flanges. From your description,
Im betting this is the problem. You also have a sleve on the passenger side
axle that can leak as well.

2) Input shaft seal
3) main seal

if its leaking fluid at either of these 2 places, you will experience other
problems that you havent described. Tranny fluid would show up at the
bottom of the tranny bell housing area.

4) The last place would be inside the drive flanges themselves. There is a
little plastic cap that seals the tranny from the inner CV boot grease ect.
If it were leaking here, you would have at least one inner boot torn and
able to leak the 1 quart you described. These rarely ever leak so I dont
think this is the problem. (nless your Velocity diff kit bolt comes loose
and leaks fluid all in your boot. Happened to me.)

>how much fluid does my tranny hold?

2.1 quarts. Just follow the instructions of filling the tranny until it
overfills.

The main thing is finding where its leaking from. Might also be a good time
to do a complete Inner and Outter CV repack and boot replacement since it
sounds like your gonna be pulling the axles out soon.
