Hey Frank,
I'll bet that it's a vacuum problem, specifacally this will happen if the
air intake boot is loose around the throttle body or air box or any of the
connections to it are missing.  It may also be battery/alternator related
since you said if you press the brakes the idle goes down.   Does it go down
when any other electrical stuff is on?  Lata
