Re: headers (yet again) (longer)

Tosha asked:

Perhaps on this note you guys can help me identify what's on this car I bought
2 months ago:

'81 Scirocco w/ 1.7 FI. There is a 4 into 1 header on it; Four pipes that
bend once to go vertical, and bend again to go under the car and _then_ join
all at once. There is a 3 bolt flange and then the cat.,  in the usual place;
over from the bottom of the shifter. From the post-cat. 3 bolt flange, is a
long straight pipe to the 'over the axle' and on to a muffler and small chrome
tip. The whole post cat is rusty, but without holes.
I've seen some, 16v I think, that had the cat in the vertical, next to the
firewall, this is not the case.

Does this thing sound familiar- recognizable to anyone? Am I gaining anything
over a dual downpipe arrangement?
I'm inclined to swap this thing back to the best stock manifold w/ dual down
pipe I can get, which as I've been hearing; the 81's weren't all that bad! (
How is the Euro any different?) People have expressed interest in this thing
if I pull it off, I'd like to know what it is first.

Stated purpose of car: Torquey in the twisties, mostly flat on most turns,
Daily driver w/ an understated appearance/low decibel level, High fun
Quotient. Won't be auto-Xing or tracking as far as I can see, won't be looking
to burn others off the line, don't need "peaky" torque range. I have a wide
ratio 5 speed and I like it that way. Future mods will increase the comfort of
the motor to cruise at speed for extended periods, as well as pull out of a
corner w/ authority.

I'm just getting back into it again. I remember prior to the Internet taking
off and it was just me, my previous car, and the Bentley.
Any help towards this end would be gratefully accepted.

Happy New Year,
TBerk

I think we are referring to tt's special long 4 into 1 race headers.
The claim a 15hp increase over other header designs in ads that I have
seen.

I live near a guy who used to run a VW racing program of some sort, and
when I asked him about what kind of header we should get for our
ProRally Rabbit, he said 'why do you want a header? Most of em out
there aren't designed properly and don't help. You will be better off
with a Euro dual outlet manifold and matching downpipe. He also said
that headers that have to fit between the head and the catcon aren't
going to be effective because the tubes can't be long enough to be tuned
properly'

Maybe these tt headers have the long primaries they need to be tuned
properly. (In this area even us jaded VW nuts have to give a nod to
Hondas etc whose exhausts come off the front of the head giving the
header designers another 10 or so inches of tube length to play with)
They really could make a substantial increase in high end power, but it
is likely that there is a significant loss at the low end. They may
also be difficult to fit under the car in a tidy fashion which could
cause problems in the real world.

Just some thoughts.
