Sounds to me like the cable is breaking strand by strand - which would
explain the "stretching" and sticking all at the same time.  Bicycle brake
and shifter cables are similar, and they get sticky and longer as they
break.  I'd replace it ASAP, can't think of another reason it'd be doing
this.....
