Re: Fuel Transfer Pump

You betcha. My exterior pump was buzzing, and I thought it would nedd to
be replaced anyways (since the car sat for 7 years)... Usually, when I was
sitting in traffic (the hotter outside the worse it was), the exterior pump
would start to buzz slightly more loudly, and then I'd start to hear a kind
of moaning coming from under the back seat, as the car idled. It would get
gradually louder until I started moving again, and then would start all
over when the car returned to idle. After about 10 minutes of this, the
car would just cut out, usually as I went to hit the gas. Luckily for me,
it would always start back up right away....
When it started doing this all the time, I replaced both pumps (the
exterior one can get damaged from lack of fuel, since it uses the gasoline
to lubricate itself). The outer one was 163.11 (with tax) from Bosch (DO
NOT USE CHEAPIE BRANDS- I tried 2 and the car would not start at all), and
the transfer pump was $65.95....
If you have the buzzing and moaning, change your pumps before your car
leaves you stranded (especially now that winter's coming!)

Oh, and by the way, the 16v's produced at the beginning of 1987 used the 8v
fuel pump (My car was 1/87 and used the 8v pump). If you want to change
this pump, too, make sure you know which one it is (write your numbers down
and/or bring it to the shop with you) I had to go back to the Bosch place
3 times to get the right one because the guy didn't believe me...
