According to a FAQ on Jan's VW Racing Page, the 16V's were exempt from
self machining and if your car was built after '86 your OK

My 87 Scirocco 16v has the AGB setup.  All it needs is a 6th gear .71
and I would be the happiest camper.  Provided it is proteced against
self-machining, mine was built in January 1987.
