16 valve idle trouble



I would like to start off by thanking all of you with your suggestions about
my odometer. Thanks to you I was able to fix it within a day. Now I would
like to pick your brains about an idle fluctuation I've been having with my
car. The car is an 87 16V and when idling it revs up to about 1500 rpms and
then back down to where it almost stalls (so far has only stalled once on me)
and then back up to around the 1500 mark and down then up....... One thing I
have noticed is that if the hose closest to the throtle body on the tubing
conecting the air box to the throtle body is disconected it seems to idle
pretty steady. Plug the hose back in and up-down, up-down goes the idle. If
anyone can think of what might cause this eratic idle I would appreciate your
input.

I would also like to know if anyone could tell me how I would go about
swapping out my 16v motor for a newer high compression 8v. What parts I could
retain from my current set-up (i.e. radiator, tranny, clutch etc) and what
parts I would need to change over. I'm not sure if I want to do this yet or
not so I'm just looking for ideas right now as my 16v is getting kind of
tired I would like to replace it sometime in the near future.
