RE: 16v Engine swap

To take an engine out of the top, use two strong bars, cross'em X-wise,
attach a strong chain in the middle (not forgetting the hook ;-) and
call some buddies to lift the engine out. I did this with a couple guys
from the local firebrigade to swap a 2.8L V6 engine out of a Ford
Taunus. If not done gently, it can hurt the engine room, and/or the
engine.

It goes pretty smoothly if every loose thing has been taken off (like
cables, tubes, accessories, etc...)

I guess I have just been lucky to have always had the luxury of
a hoist,
I guess you are right that without one, through the bottom is
about the
	only way.
Just a note, most places like Uhaul rent hoists pretty cheap,
especially
if you get them for a weekend.
