Ignition module.

A while back I was having starting problems on my 86 8V, as part of the diagnosis process, I hunted around for junkyard bits and came across an ignition module off an '84 (or so) that was identical to mine, save for the addition of a letter at the end of the P/N.  Can't remember what it was, but I think their was also Fairchild molded into it somewhere.  My understanding is that during a particular run of 'rocco's there was some OEM experimentation with modules.  Does anyone know the diff between them; am I making this all up; or is this there no diff whatsoever.
