getting through the dang firewall

I just want to know how all of you get lines through the firewall to the engine bay.  In my 
experience this is one of the most difficult things on a Scirocco.  There is so much fireproof 
material that moving it is impossible and drilling is hard because I can't see where to drill.  I 
just need to get a vacuum line through the firewall for my MFA and of course I'll need to run 
a lot of wires through there later as well.  Should I just take the plunge and drill a big ol hole 
and run all wires through there?  Thanks a lot
