Charging system woes

Yesterday, when I got to work in my lovely '81_S, I noticed that I was
on a quarter tank of fuel... Odd since I had just filled up 5 miles
back. But then it hit me- low voltage. Sure enough, when I tried to turn
the engine over, nothing.
 The odd thing about this, though is that for the past five months
(since I've had the car), the alternator light has been on (though very
very dimly). Now, however, when I jump start the car, & disconnect the
jumper cables, no light at all... Any ideas why?
