My '84 came with a 1.8L 90h.p. with 8.5:1 comp. also.

I had a '88 Fox a few years ago and loved the car. It's what turned me on to VW's. It wasn't 
as quick as my Scirocco but had it up to 115 mph a couple times. That wasn't the top 
speed and it had a 4 speed. I believe a Fox to be about 200-300 lbs heavier. Valve size is 
37.2mm in. 32.4mm ex.
