Usually not.  If the water level is good in all the cells, and the 
battery is in a fully charged state, you can check condition with a 
hydrometer.  Most places that sell batteries have them and will do a 
free check.  This measures the specific gravity of the electrolyte 
(water) in each cell.  They should all read roughly equal.  Anything 
more than a slight variation means you're in need of a battery.

Also, the kind battery folks can do a load test on the battery.  This 
just draws a quick but large amount of current from the battery to 
check to see if the battery has the capacity to recover.  Hope that
