VW VIN# format

   The VIN format didn't come into play until 1980. Before that, at 
least with watercooled VW's, the first two digits of the VIN are the 
model and the third digit is the year it was made. The rest is the 
sequence number, IIRC, the car was built. For 1979, the build date and 
the VIN range is listed below.
