VW VIN# format

This is from 4crawler, but I've seen somewhere that the current format is 
only on cars from 1980 on up.

The crazy coincidence is that my VW's all were WVW which means W-Germany, 
V-VW, W-Passenger car and my Audi was WAU which means W-Germany, A-Audi, 
U-passenger car.  It's just the way their VINs work that it came out WVW and 
WAU.

    I'm in the process of buying a '79 (online); about to send a down 
payment on it and asked the owner for the VIN# which he gave me as: 
53920XXXXX [last 5 X's are numeric].
    Hmm... doesn't seem right. IIRC, a VW VIN# should be longer, and begin 
with 3 or 4 letter characters.
    Can someone one please enlighten me as to what is the correct 
alphanumeric format for a 1979 Scirocco VIN number?
