Use of foam as insulator?

I was able to fairly easily pull the stuff out with a propane torch
and a putty knife. Hot as hell, and stank like a mofo, but it didn't
take too much force. In a related side note, when I was eight or nine,
as a punishment for staying up all night, my friend and I were given
small putty knives and told the clean out the inside of a 40's coupe
that was being redone as a street rod. That REALLY sucked.
