Bimotor Scirocco vs.... Flickr discussion??

Photography buffs out there may be vaguely amused by the (somewhat 
heated) discussion on this Flickr discussion thread (Scirocco content 
begins about halfway down):

The gist:  two posters "disagree" about whether using two identical 
flashes will "double" the power of light output.  One says yes 
technically you double the power, but you can't double the distance that 
you can light the subject, that it's like stuffing a second engine in 
the trunk of a car - it doesn't go twice as fast.

What - second engine in the trunk??  I think I've heard something like 
this before...!  And maybe it does go "twice as fast" - depending on how 
you define "fast" (acceleration vs. top speed).
