Callaway Peices

Hi Dan,

With what you've said about the cam shafts from the 1.6 being better than the 1.7/1.8 ones, when I swap my 1.6l motor to a 1.8 from an '83 GTI (the motor was free to me) would you recommend swapping the cam shafts?

  Thanks,

  Very interesting!
It's clearly a 1.6/1.7 head since the coolant outlet is between cylinders 1 & 2.
But it does have, at least, a 40mm intake valve and the combustion chamber has been modified to look very much like the later 1.8 head chamber.
I'm sure the 1.6/1.7 heads didn't come with a 40mm intake, but maybe I'm full of shit and some of the later ones had the revised chamber.
Be nice to have some pictures of the ports to see if they were modified also, but that's probably more money to disassemble and reassemble.

I imagine his reference to 385-400 is the cam lift. There isn't much else you can measure on a camshaft without something like a cam doctor especially without removing it from the head. So the cam is probably a stock 1.6 cam. The 1.5/1.6 cams had .405 lift, the later 1.7/1.8 cam (THE lamest of the bunch) only had .369 lift. The stock 1.6 cam is not a bad thing. You don't want to go to a hotter cam that has a lot more overlap. It won't work well with a turbo although a custom grind with more duration or lift would make more power as long as the overlap was kept to a reasonable number.

It's going to be a nice engine!

So, got anymore pictures of the turbo and exhaust manifold??
Dan
