Gas in the oil, HELP :(

Hi all,
One more comment on the sticking fuel metering plunger; early cars are a
little more vulnerable in cold weather.
On early CIS, the air box has only a single air inlet, it draws air at
ambient temperature [I've seen this type of air box on '76 Audi 100LS and
Fox, and '76/ '77 Sciroccos and Rabbits]. Later air boxes have two inlet
paths with a temperature operated flap to control which is open. One path
draws 'cool' air, from behind the headlight or wherever, the other path
leads to a small plate on the exhaust manifold, so air from that source is
heated somewhat before going into the air box.
The early type could create 'icing' in the fuel block under certain
conditions (ambient air temp hovering around freezing, very moist air),
which would cause the plunger to stick open and flood the engine with fuel.
Drawing air warmed by the exhaust manifold prevents that from happening.
Those of you with early cars (in cold climates) might want to check to
see what you've got, and later types check that the flap is functional. It's
a fist- sized black plastic assembly mounted on the lower part of the air
box; two phillips- head screws I think. Easy to check; remove it and put in
your freezer for a half hour or so, one air path will be open, at room
temperature the other path should be open.
