Get a car that isn't like this:

But seriously I had a friend who went through the same thing recently
(except he is a new dad) and he went for the Mazda 3 basic model. At
28/35 mpg it spanked the Rabbit's 22/30 even though he would have wanted
the VW more. Also he got 4 doors for free when VW wanted thousands
extra even though he now regrets the crank windows.

He drove the Yaris and others but for the price the Mazda creamed the
competition. Also he is a piano salesman (they cost as much as cars)
who once tried selling cars for a few months and went partially by the
slime factor he felt emanating from the various dealers so he may not
have experienced the Fit properly.

Use the force, Lex. The Fit looks like a good option. No yak rack from
the dealer but Thule has one that fits with many options. Check for any
car at http://www.thuleracks.com
