OT - WTB: Old Road Bike

Fixed gear = no freewheel. If your bike is moving, your pedals are
moving.

It's a minimal sort of transportation popular with bike messengers for
its simplicity, as well as its lack of weight and complexity. There are
no derailleurs to break, no brakes to come out of adjustment, and a
general lack of components is a nice departure from the techno-craziness
of the bike world. Granted, I like riding a techno-cool road or mtn
bike, too, just not all of the time.

I have an old steel Performance frame with a Suzue fixed gear rear hub.
I also built up some Velocity double-walled Aerohead wheels built up
with some straight gauge spokes and brass eyelets. Stout as hell. In
fact, I've ridden it for about two years without needing to true either
wheel up.

Fixed gears are AWESOME!

Grant,

Oh someone building a fix gear???? I never pegged you for a fixie....
Well, It could be worse you could be a pixie!

Well that is not to bad either, I loved the Pixies and boy could that
Black Francis scream

Ok I digress, everywhere I look in Ann Arbor the fixed gear craze is
present....One would think a velodrome was near by... Maybe there is
one? Anyhow if you see anything on CL in my area and you want me to snag
it let me know.

Looking for an older road bike. Prefer minimal components - just
frame, fork, maybe bottom bracket, stem, headset, handlebars, brakes.
Prefer horizontal dropouts, which were more common on older bikes,
especially those built for the velodrome. A unique steel lugged frame
would be awesome. Bianchi, Colnago, etc would be great but I know my
chances of finding that are slimmer.

Got anything cluttering up the garage? I'll give you a fair price for
it and pay any associated shipping charges.

I'm turning it into a cheap around-town bike. Planning to strip it,
paint it an obnoxious colour (1- so you're seen in traffic, 2-less
likely to be stolen), convert it to a single-speed drivetrain with
decent quality components, narrow handlebars, front brake only, throw
on some strong road wheels and ride it around. I have a nice carbon
racing bike, but I don't want to ride that into town or to school.

Part of me is thinking, too, that it'd be fun to have an italian road
bike from the 70's or 80's to go with my italian designed 1980 VW.
Colour match them and take them to shows, I think it'd add a unique
element.
