turbo

Depends on how inventive you are (what fabrication skills you have) and how much you like scrounging junkyards.
There are people (on Vortex) that claim they can do it for $500.
I can't build junk (or at least I hope I'm not building junk) so at the minimum.
Turbo, new, T3 60 trim, $500
Turbo manifold, $300
Downpipe. You can't buy one anymore that I know of. Parts to build one are around $150 if you go stainless. Labor is a couple hundred (at least if I do it!).
Volvo CIS metering unit and WUR to get decent fueling under boost. Probably around $100 used.
Have to do something with the distributor. I think MSD has something that will retard ignition vs. boost. I just used Megaspark back in the CIS days, then converted that to MSnS-e and went full engine control after ditching the CIS.
Your engine is already a low compression engine and pretty rugged, so it's an excellent basis for a turbo engine as long as it's in good shape.
>From my perspective that's sort of the minimum you can do.

Things to improve to performance and allow you to run more boost safely.
Convert to aftermarket engine management.
Bigger exhaust system.
Intercooler.
And, of course, there's always a bigger turbo to install.

Problems you might have:
Traction! Even with a limited slip differential it'll be somewhat of a problem.
Tranny reliability. Everybody says this is a problem but my nephew has 220 lb-ft and he's good so far.
Clutch slip. Not a problem if you only run low boost, but we all know how long that lasts!
If your engine isn't in good shape it'll get significant blowby pretty quickly with boost.
Brakes! It'll be easy to overheat your brakes with the additional power.

So, what's with the WRX STI email name???
