To Stretch or Not to Stretch?

If you want my theory, 1) they are cheaper to make (supposition), and 2)
when they fail, more will break, in turn making VW more money...

The longer I worked at the dealership, the more differences I saw between
aftermarket and factory parts. Factory waterpumps have plastic impellers,
which when corrosion sets in between the shaft and the plastic impeller, it
splits-off, another sale is made. Aftermarket pumps often have metal
impellers, which do not have this trouble. Factory clutch cables have a
white-plastic sheath at one end that is designed to fail after X amount of
abuse, while the aftermarket units are usually configured like giant bike
brake cable housings all-the-way through.

It's all supposition really, as we have no proof. But the evidence seems to
support the theory...

Why did VW switch to stretch bolts? and if you notice a new 1.8L bolt is
slightly shorter than a new 2.0L bot for a 16V. The 2.0L bolt length
matches the length of the original hex head one.
