15 years ago VW did the same thing, called it a "Golf Country" and never
sold it in the US. See:

There was a Golf County at Waterfest this year. Imported from Japan to
Canada, and then from Canada to the USA. Damn cool, and as close to a SUV as
I would ever want.

Saw this in Cancun earlier this year.  SUVs are such a hit in the US, I
wonder why VWoA never introduced this vehicle?  I would not buy one but I
think it looks better than a RAV4, Element, Pilot or any KIA.
